This week I had the strong desire to clean my keyboard because it was really dirty and disgusting. The cleaning results are okay but the plastic is still bleached out because this keyboard is at least ten years old. The keyboard is even not listed at the discontinued section at the producers website but it still works fine. It even has one of these half inch wide DIN connectors. Currently I use a adapter to connect it to my computer to the PS2 port. My brother connected his keyboard to his smartphone with the following adapters: DIN to PS2, PS2 to USB and USB to MicroUSB. I never thought that something like this could work but it does – so I think I can continue to use my keyboard and therefore it is legitimate to clean it.
Here is a picture of my cleaned keyboard:
- Here you can see how dirty the keys have been.
- In the first step I picked up a paper-clip and bent it to…
- a key removal tool and pulled of all the keys from the keyboard
- I put the keys in a bowl with warm water and and dishwasher cleaner – alphabet soup
- After the removal of the keys I disassembled the keyboard which worked good because everything was held together with simple cross head screws (except for the function keys)
- This is the left part of the keyboard without the keys but dirty.
- I removed the dirt with a vacuum cleaner and cotton swabs.
- Here you can see the inner side of the keyboard with all components reassembled.
- The function keys have to be reattached with hot glue because there are only defect plastic clips.
